Support earthquake & tsunami relief efforts in Japan

SOGOJapan.org has been set up by type designer Neil Summerour of Positype Type Foundry to “deliver funds via contributions made by individuals directly to organizations in Japan”.

Donations of $30 and $50 will receive a licensed copy of a custom cut of Positype’s typeface Angel Script, which is a gorgeous OTF font with many alternate glyphs.

Here is a poster I designed using the typeface, which I received this morning.

SOTA (The Society Of Typographic Aficionados) is responding with another “FontAid” font project – “a collaborative project uniting the typographic and design communities with a goal of raising funds to expedite relief efforts after the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.” Designers are invited to submit up to three glyphs for inclusion in a special font which will be sold to raise funds. Closing date for receipt of art is 25 March next. More info on the SOTA site or via the discussion thread on typophile.com

Irish Times review of ‘Enniscorthy, a history’

The book ‘Enniscorthy, a history’ edited by Colm Tóibín and designed here at bite! was reviewed in today’s Irish Times.

THE FIRST THING that will strike and delight any reader of this wonderful book is how beautifully designed, illustrated and produced it is. The designer, John Foley of Bite!, once again combines aesthetic sensitivity with technical brilliance, as he did in a series of titles for Cork University Press in its heyday. His design has been triumphantly realised by Citiprint, in Cork. In this book Foley constantly engages the eye, marrying text to a fascinating and colourful range of images, including maps, paintings, old photographs and many fine new ones, commissioned from local photographer Donald McDonald.
